Kauwen op Water | i.s.m. OneWorld Live

Chewing on Water

Talkshow | Marijn Frank & Gerbrand Haverkamp | 90 min | Dutch spoken
Voorstelling: Friday 22 March 20:00 | Rabozaal (SK/3)

On 22 March, World Water Day, the Food Film Festival and One World Live will host a talk show on the role of water in food production. The production of one cup of coffee, for example, requires 140 litres of water; a kilo of beef, 15,000 litres. But what exactly is a water footprint?

What do these numbers really tell us? And how significant is this water consumption? Time for some clarification.

Presenters Gerbrand Haverkamp (Ministry of Economic Affairs) and Marijn Frank will talk to guests including Arjen Hoekstra, Professor in Water Management at the University of Twente. Hoekstra is known around the world for his standard for measuring water consumption per finished product. During the talk show he will also present his new book The Water Footprint of Modern Consumer Society.

Water grabbing and the impact of water removal from vulnerable areas in southern countries will also be addressed. And of course we will discuss practical solutions: The viability of drip irrigation for example. Or, the smart use of salt water: Marc van Rijsselberghe will tell us about his 'zilte landbouw'-boerderij. And with the Voedingscentrum (Nutrition Centre), we look at what consumers can do to reduce their water footprint.
